The broom or broomstick is probably the best-known magical means of transportation in the Harry Potter books and movies. In Hogwarts Legacy, you will as well have the opportunity to fly through the air with your broom and explore the open world.

What Role Do Flying Brooms Play in the Wizarding World?
In the Wizarding World universe, where both Hogwarts Legacy and the Harry Potter stories are set, the flying broom is the most popular mode of transport for witches and wizards. In the Harry Potter books and movies, the main focus is on the racing brooms of the Nimbus series and the racing broom Firebolt.
Since the story of Hogwarts Legacy takes place at the end of the 19th century, the broomsticks in the game are far from being as developed as we know them from Harry Potter. Broom technology is not as well-known and advanced as it was at the time of the Harry Potter events some 100 years later. “This is an earlier time where we’re still trying to figure out”, according to game director Alan Tew in Gameplay Showcase II.
How Flying With the Broom Works
You learn to fly a broomstick in Hogwarts Legacy as part of the broomstick flying class in the main quest Flycin Class. Learning and mastering the broomstick flight is highly recommended to have the opportunity to travel faster in the world.
You can’t play Quidditch in Hogwarts Legacy. However, it is possible to fly broom races and freely explore the locations around Hogwarts. Several gameplay scenes feature floating red balloons with yellow stars, perhaps marking a broom racing track or a special challenge.
Apparently, you can fall off the broom and die in the process. In a post on Instagram, voice actor Amelia Gething explained that she can be heard in-game getting “getting fried by a dragon” or falling off a broom to her “inevitable death.” Amelia Gething is responsible for Voice 2 of the player character in Hogwarts Legacy.
Broom flying comes with its own set of mechanics in Hogwarts Legacy:
- If you’re flying on your broom, you’ll see a yellow bar on the bottom right of the screen, the “turbo meter”.
- The turbo bar will empty when you fly at maximum speed.
- If you stay close to the ground, you can fly at maximum speed without the bar depleting.
- As you fly higher in the air, the turbo bar will begin to empty. If you fly higher, you can only fly at maximum speed for a limited time.
- If you fly close to the ground again, the turbo bar will fill up again.

Broom Customization & Broom Upgrades
The 13 broomsticks in Hogwarts Legacy seem to differ only in appearance and not in function. However, you can customize your broom with upgrades. Both cosmetic and functional upgrades are available to you.
In the wizarding village of Hogsmeade, there is a sports shop called Spintwitches Sporting Needs where you can buy 5 of the brooms directly. If you talk and help the broom shopkeeper Albie Weekes in various missions, he will also sell you broom upgrades that improve your broom. For example, there is an upgrade that allows you to fly more off the ground without draining the turbo bar.
